Firepelt padded to Snakerocks. He wanted to be away from the camp for a while. There was never any time to think in the bustle of the camp. Stepping gingerly onto the rocks, Firepelt looked around for adders. Snakerocks was notorious for the adders that liked to sun themselves here. Spotting none, Firepelt sat down on the rocks and surveyed his surroundings.
He noticed a leaf falling from a tree, drifting lazily down to the ground, like it had all the time in the world. Firepelt felt peaceful, and yawned. The intense sunlight made his pelt feel warm, and, enjoying the sensation, rolled onto his back so that his stomach would feel some warmth too.
His eyes began to droop and he yawned again, his white teeth glinting in the sunlight. Slowly, he slipped into a light slumber.
***
A noise awoke the sleeping cat. He couldn't match the sound to an object, for he was still drowsy, and looked around confused. He jumped into the grass. After stretching, his shook his head to clear the cobwebs out. Firepelt's ears twitched, and the sound that had woken him seemed to grow louder. The sound seemed to come from all directions. His ears spun in all directions in a flurry, and Firepelt's heart began to race.
sssssss
The sound grew louder still. In front of him an adder slithered through the tall grass. The hissing from behind him was louder too, and from both the left and right sides. His heart seemed to be beating out of his chest. He knew that he was surrounded. A quick glance told him he was right. Four or five adders had trapped him in a circle. Taking a step in any direction only made him closer to another adder.
Judging the distance, Firepelt decided to try jumping out of his predicament. In doing so, he landed wrong and twisted his paw. It didn't feel right, and if he put any pressure on it, he winced in pain. The adders had changed direction and were coming at him again. Scared and fearing for his life, Firepelt shouted for help. He hoped someone was around Snakerocks and would hear his cry for help. The adders were quickly gaining on him, and with his injured paw, he could not move as fast.
