A white she-cat lay curled up at the outskirts of the WindClan camp. Small ears twitched, and swiveled to take in all that was going around the cat. Most cats wouldn't have bothered, in one glimpse they would've spotted who was out, who wasn't, if there was danger, and where the next rock was. Maluuni was not a normal cat. She was blind. Blank eyes turned to adjust her hearing and to tune her sense of smell. She stood up, rising with a grace that defied the fact of her blindness. Maluuni was a small cat, much smaller than normal females, but she was incredibly powerful and muscular. As the she-cat walked to a small spot of dappled shade, the muscles in her legs and back rippled like living things. Her tail constantly flicked about her sides, feeling for any sudden boulders or cats rising up out of nowhere.
Maluuni skirted a tom crossing the clearing and settled down in a spot of shade. From the smell, she could tell that a yew bush was giving her this shade. Her brother always liked to sleep under yews. The thought of her brother gave Maluuni a lump in her throat. She swallowed it, then reminded herself, He is still with me. She turned sightless eyes to the skies. You're still with me, aren't you? she pleaded soundlessly. Almost in response to her quiery, she felt a presence beside her. A warm pelt pressed against her. Maluuni would've drawn away, if she hadn't recognized the scent that had accompanied the feeling as her brother's. A soft voice whispered in her ear, You know I am. I swore to never leave you until death, but I am still here. I am still here to guide you and to help you. Almost as quickly as it came, the voice faded, taking with it the warm being beside her. Maluuni settled her head on her paws. She was not alone. Her brother was still there to help her.

As the intense prarie heat beat down on WindClan camp, the air was thick with heat, thicker then air was supposed to be. A soft breeze whistled through the long grass, but it was hot, and made the camp seem even more laden with heat. Shadepelt streached, and yawned, the sunlight glinting off her teeth, empasizing the deadly fangs, used to bring down prey, or enemy warriors. The black fur which Shadepelt was covered with, sucked in all the heat it could, leaving the young she-cat sweltering, and savagly thirsty. She shook each leg in turn, and padded out of the warriors den. As she stepped out into the clearing, she looked around for a cat to share tongues with, but almost no cat got up as early as she liked to. Then something caught her eye, a white she-cat, laying under a yew bush. Ahh, it's Maluuni. Shadepelt didn't talk to her much, but she had occationaly passed a few words by the fresh kill pile. Not wanting to startle the blind cat, Shadepelt did a wide circle around the camp, so she came up in front of Maluuni. "Hello," Shadepelt mewed pleasently, "Fine morning isn't it?"

Maluuni turned her head, looking directly at Shadepelt, for all the world as if she could see her. "Yes," she mewed. She paused, then spoke again, "You don't need to worry about startling me. I can hear and smell much better than you can because I can't see. I know where you are," the she-cat sniffed the air. "You'd think all that water you drank in the stream with Thade would at least quench your thirst," she mewed good-naturedly.
The white cat stood up, circled, then settled back down again. "Come, come, Shadepelt," she meowed, "Tell me what you came here for. You didn't come all the way from the Warrior's Den just to see me, did you?"

Shadepelt hesitated for a moment, she did like talking to Maluuni, but there was something she wanted to ask her. "Ummm, Maluuni? It's okay if you don't want to answer this, but, how did you become blind?" She had always wondered, if Maluuni had been born blind, or did something happen? Maluuni was as strong as any cat, and her other senses were sharped when she lost her sight.
Shadepelt looked at Maluuni thouroughly. She didn't see just a normal cat, she saw a extra sensitive tail, used to find hidden rocks and boulders. She saw ears, always pinpointing the smallest sound, and she saw paws. Paws that could feel the movments through the ground. Shadepelt looked admiringly at Maluuni, she was one of the strongest cats she knew.

Maluuni hesitated. Inside she debated with how much to tell her. She'd never told another cat the truth about her or her family or her brother or her fall before. A comforting voice whispered in her head, Tell her the truth. Maluuni shook off her brother's voice. She couldn't, at least not yet.
The she-cat turned blank eyes to the black cat, and mewed simply, "Fell." Maluuni imagined the scene in her mind's eye. Before she had even gotten to the part where she actually did fall, she shut it out. She looked back at Shadepelt. "Is that all?" she asked briskly.

Shadepelt tryed to shake away the awkwardness, she could tell Maluuni was discomferted. "Yes, thanks. I'm just really curious that's all. I was a very annoying kit." Shadepelt attempted at a joke, and purred awkwardly. Bowing her head towards Maluuni, she started to pad away, picturing the fall, wincing as the picture of crushed bones, and yowls of pain. Stopping in the center of the clearing, Shadepelt stopped, and began to groom herself. Long licks down her flank flattened her ruffled fur, and soon she was done, and looking half persentable. Turning her head, and looking back at Maluuni, Shadepelt tilted her head in wonder. What could have happended? She would never know. At first she wanted to go and ask again, then she gasped, she would never be that rude! Trying to forget about it, Shadepelt licked her paws, and drew them over her ears, each in turn. As she did this, she began to think of all the possibilities, each more gruesome then the first.

Maluuni tilted her head, listening as Shadepelt walked away. When she heard the rasp of tongue on fur, she knew that the cat was grooming herself, and most likely mulling over her response. Maluuni cocked her head and called, "If you want to look decent, clean your pelt some more! I may not be able to see, but I can hear well enough to know you stopped groomed why too soon!" With that said, the white cat rose and---feeling with her paws and tail and smelling with her nose---walked over to the Warrior's Den. She would take a nap, now that every other cat was out on patrol or hunting.

Shadepelt purred, Good ol' Maluuni. But, she was right, Shadepelt still looked like she had just fought a badger. Continuing to clean her thick, black fur, Shadepelt began to think. She thought about how she would feel if she were blind, how she could never again see the prarie grasses, swaying in the breeze. Never again would she see all the cats at gatherings, or the beauty of a flower. Shaking her head, Shadepelt silently thanked StarClan that she could still see, and prayed, that by some miricle, Maluuni would be able to see again.
She watched Maluuni walk over to the Warriors Den, and Shadepelt let her go with no questions. The sun was climbing higher into the sky, and Shadepelt knew with her black pelt, she would get over heated easily. So she dicided to go hunting now, while the sun was still low. Not looking back, she trotted over to the tunnel of bracken leading out of the camp.
