With gasping breaths, Krova could here Ashfur's neither note nor feel her biting into his scruff to pull him out. His senses were boggled up, but he dare not show any signs of weakness in front of this old she-cat, if her could help it. With a mighty heave, he pulled parts of his body-hind legs-out of the mud, but without his energy, he slide back in. The force of the drop had left him in, literally, a hole. He had made a dent in the sticky goo beneath him. He only hoped now that the hole did not fill in with more of the mud.

Feeling a kit-like helplessness, Ashfur dug her claws into the ground, hoping it might help. Her eyes darted to either side, searching for any sign of another cat and seeing no one. StarClan, help me to save him! she thought, calling out to her last hope, Krova's last hope. If not for his sake, for mine. She took a deep breath and tugged as hard as she could, hoping she wouldn't tear out his fur. She could see the tom's body slightly lift out of the mud. A glimpse of hope was given to the old warrior. "Fight for your life!" she yowled through the mouthful of fur. "Swallow your pride and pray to StarClan for strength! They are giving you another chance. Now take it and live!" With that said, Ashfur pulled with all her might, hoping it would be enough. Hope, it was all she had left. That and the will of StarClan, whatever that might be.

Krova gasped and bunched his legs to push. He sprang out of the slick mud only to go flying into a trunk of a tree. Without thinking, Krova swung around and ducked his head. His body was shaking to mush for him to stop. His eyes darted from paw to paw only looking at the ground. "I could've died." He looked up at Ashfur and then added, "Thank You." He closed his eyes and got onto all four paws. "Sorry." He mewed hopelessly. He started to walk to the RiverClan camp with all strength washed out of him. Before he made it to far, his legs buckled and then released his weight to the ground. He tried to heave himself up, but the ground would not stop moving.

As soon as Krova came out of the mud, the old she-cat released his fur, a few strands of jet black fur sticking in her mouth. She spat them out as her legs collapsed beneath her. Panting, she looked over at the tom, nodding in reply to his thanks. When at last her heartbeat returned to normal, Ashfur stood and walked over to her Clanmate's shaking form.
"It's all right to just rest there for a few moments, you know. No cat would blame you for it." With an amused glint in her shining blue eyes, she added, "I told you I wouldn't get tired first."
She then turned to go and collect the prey she had caught earlier, her stony gray pelt tinted orange in the light of the sinking sun. A relieved sigh escaped the old warrior's lips once she was out of earshot. She had managed to save him, that self-centered young tom. Now, after he rested a couple of minutes, they could return to camp. Pausing as she picked up each of the furry little bodies that littered the ground, Ashfur looked at the golden sunset. Yes, it was time to go home.

Krova looked up into the she-cat's eyes. The only thing he could see in Ashfur's pools of grey was a mix of 'I-told-you-so' and somewhat relief. Though, he wished he could nip her ear, Krova felt as though his legs would never allow him to move again. The getting out of the mud was only the first part, now Krova had to survive the walk home along with a snobby Ashfur. At the thought, he felt a bolt of prickling feeling go down his spine. This, for sure, will leave me to cover my head for all of StarClan in turn!
With eyes narrowed, Krova replied to Ashfur's smart (butt) comment, "That does not count. I was acting like a foolish kit with only an experienced warrior to help me. Not mentioning that the experienced warrior had a big mouth, though." With a sigh, he added, "Can... Can we not tell anyone about this? Please?"
With the sun setting, and Ashfur collecting the prey, Krova's feelings for the nearly elder she-cat had grown a lot more since the beginning of the hunt. With her strength, compared to a young tom's like Krova, Ashfur had been strong enough to keep her body from not shutting down, and at the same time, not letting him sink into the mud father, and getting stuck for all eternity. He truly respected her now, more than he ever thought possible.

Now holding all of the fresh-kill she'd caught earlier, the stony-colored she-cat turned to her shadow-like companion.
"That all depends on if the foolish kit has grown-up into the warrior he is known at camp as." Her voice, muffled from the prey in her mouth, held all of its well known snappiness and scorn, though her eyes revealed a look of teasing and kindness not usually found in them. "Now, if you'd like to try to watch where you step, I suggest we go home."
With a flick of her tail, Ashfur turned around, this time waiting a moment before starting forward. A sigh stuck in her throat, one of disappointment this time. Like so many other cats of this time, Krova could be a great warrior, determined to serve RiverClan and StarClan. In this era of doubt, however, he was rebellious, a truly horrid companion to his cockiness. There was so much he could do, if only pride weren't so relentless. From now on, the aging warrior thought, I'll try to help this new generation reach its highest, rather than just scorn it. After thinking this, she smirked at herself. Old age was turning her soft. pausing to look over her shoulder, Ashfur waited for Krova to join her.

Krova looked once more at the grey she-cat. In his open mind, he never dreamt that a-to-be elder would have enough strength to tease, taunt, hunt, save, and waste free air on a immature warrior all for the outcome of a closer relationship. Krova knew that Ashfur would never in her right mind admit this, but he knew that somewhere, even in the most coldest, and darkest pits of her heart, Ashfur had a soft spot that glowed like a flying cinder off of a bark of a burning tree or wood pile. I came for a hunt, Krova let dwell into his mind, Not for a friend. I came to feed the Clan. I only needed help, and I had no one else to go with. I now shall come back with a mind full of life saving and live changing moments that would have all happened in the same sky setting. Krova shivered. He had never felt this way before with another cat. All he knew, was this feeling was not one of love or lust, just pure... Shock. With a jolt, he relized that the she-cat was waiting for him to move his arse off of the ground. Forgetting all pain, Krova got up, shakily though, and made way over to Ashfur. The grey cat's eyes shone with a mixture of feelings that Krova could not put his paw on. He had never seen Ashfur act the way she did today, nor did he think, at her age, could she do what she did... But she proved him wrong. I guess now, Krova could stick the saying in his head for now and till he has kits of his own: Don't judge prey by it's coat. What is on the outside, may not counter what is on the inside. And for prey, the ones that look like carrion, are the ones that taste like heaven.

((Nah, It's fine, even though you did compare my cat to prey [lol] ))
Assuming that the shaky Krova would follow her, Ashfur started slowly toward camp. Could anyone have guessed how much the two warriors now heading back to camp ((I'm not meaning to powerplay here! It's what going on in Ashfur's head)) would change on that hunt? Of course, it wasn't surprising. After a cat had stared death in the eye and survived, there was no telling how they might change. It seemed like Krova had changed for the better, had matured, even if just enough for the aging she-cat to notice. What about Ashfur herself though? Had she changed? And if she had, would anyone notice? It was a strange thing, trying to notice one's personal growth just barely after it had happened.
Does it really even matter? a quiet voice asked from deep inside.
Yes, it does to me.
At least StarClan knows.
StarClan knows.... That's all that should ever matter. A glance at Krova confirmed that thought. Gluing her eye in front of her again, Ashfur set her mind to getting back to camp in one piece. Back home.
